The obligatory life update

If you’re reading this, you probably already know what’s going on in my life. If there’s anyone else that is reading this and cares here you go…

I guess the big news is I just got a full-time job at Calvin Klein. I start on Monday. This also means I’m looking for a new apartment. If anyone knows of anything nice, and by nice I mean clean and not run-down, in Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, or Williamsburg please let me know.

I’m still waiting to hear back from the Teaching Fellows. Keep your fingers crossed and pray for me!

Other than that, there isn’t really anything new or exciting going on in my life. What can I say? I’m uncool.

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies

I’m sure everyone, at least everyone who reads this, knows that I love to bake. I love to bake all kinds of things. Cakes, cookies, bread, muffins, cupcakes, pies, the list goes on and on. Yesterday I baked a certain someone cookies for Valentines Day. White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies to be exact. They turned out amazing!

The recipe is from browneyedbaker.com. I had never seen this site before but I’m in love. Here’s the recipe…

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies

Yield: About 2 dozen cookies (I got more like 3 dozen)

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup butter, melted
1 cup packed light brown sugar
½ cup white sugar
1 egg
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1½ cups chopped macadamia nuts (I used unsalted)
2 cups white chocolate chips (I used a block of white chocolate and chopped it)

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease baking sheets or line with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt and set aside.
3. Beat together the melted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Beat in the egg, then beat in the egg yolk, then beat in the vanilla.
4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture until just moistened. Stir in the macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips by hand with a rubber spatula.
5. Roll into balls or drop by heaping tablespoons onto baking sheets, and press down on the cookies with your palm a bit to flatten (not too much!).
6. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges look golden brown and the middles don’t look quite set. Allow to finish cooling on the baking sheet. (12 minutes was perfect for me but don’t forget to bake your test cookie!)

I’ve always loved Simon and Garfunkel and their solo work. Ok probably Paul’s solo work more, but still. They’re real New Yorkers and there’s real New York references in their lyrics. As a kid these references went completely over my head. Which is why I love that shows like Sesame Street, The Muppets, and now Yo Gabba Gabba have actual, real, interesting artists on.

I found this video of Paul Simon on Sesame Street. You gotta love that little girl! She’s having so much fun and he looks like he’s having a lot of fun with her. Not to mention she’s actually talented. Keep in mind she’s probably around 6 and then look at the way she deals with that key change. The other kids dancing in front of the stoop are great, too.

New York, I Love You

This has been a recurring theme as of late. All the things I love about New York. One of my favorite things is the New York Times and specifically it’s Metropolitan Diary section. This section single-handedly reminds me every week exactly what it is I love about the city. Generally it has something to do with the mash-up of humanity the city is. But this story in particular made me smile. It’s in today’s paper or website or however you take your news.

Dear Diary:

In town for my son’s graduation from Columbia University, I stood across Broadway from the university’s main gate while he ran for coffee.

Within moments, a lone boy of about 8 stood in front of me, tilted his dark eyes upward and spoke in a language that, to me, was incomprehensible. I asked, “Spanish?” and he replied, “Arabic.”

Holding hands, we crossed Broadway to the university’s iron security booth, where a no-nonsense woman stood speaking loudly and authoritatively on an enormous walkie-talkie.

Motioning for us to wait, the boy answered his cellphone, and I could faintly hear the rushed and worried questions from a voice that had to be his mother’s.

The security guard sharply turned to us and I explained our predicament. She grabbed her walkie-talkie and shouted, “We need an Arabic speaker to the Broadway gate and we need him here right now!”

A passing young woman stopped and said, “I speak Arabic.” Quickly, she learned that our young friend, Mohammed, was from Yemen visiting relatives, and that a slight mix-up in the address had caused him to lose his way.

As Mohammed’s mother was comforted in her own language, a security car pulled onto the sidewalk, the officer was briefed, and he said, “Get in, Mohammed, and I’ll take you to your aunt’s house.” The three of us watched the silhouette of the boy’s head through the car’s rear window, bound for his family.

We turned to face each other, and the security guard threw back her head and shouted, “Life is good!”

I also have a thing for little kids in the city. I think it has something to do with such a small person surrounded by huge buildings and cars and the look of wonderment they have on their face.

Anyways, I’ll be back for a week in 2 days!

In Between

Fast Company has a pretty interesting blog entry up today exploring the idea of transitional space or In-Between Space. This is always something that’s interested me. I guess because, now that I think about it, I’ve lived my life in-between for quite some time now. First in grad school, not quite working full-time not really a regular student anymore. I spent most of last year traveling for work, which kept me from really settling in to anything. And now, literally, in-between jobs and coasts. There’s an interesting tension that occurs in this space and as a planner I feel better able to make objective observations as an outsider in both LA and NYC. There’s no time like the present, especially because I’m young and not tied down to anything, to be in-between. But here’s to hoping that it won’t last very much longer.
